Cone Beam
One of the most important steps required in getting restorative dental implants is to get a cone beam CT. This exam provides 3D images of your teeth, soft tissues, nerve locations and jaw bone, which helps your provider understand your personal anatomy. The information is then used to create a more personalized treatment plan and guides the placement of your implants.
Cone beam CT images are also useful for identifying dental infections and tooth cracks or fractures. If your provider believes you may have a dental infection or broken tooth, information from a cone beam CT exam can help clarify treatment options and minimize time spent with dental pain.

What To Expect
- This exam requires no special preparation.
- Prior to the exam, you may be asked to remove all jewelry, eyeglasses, hairpins and hearing aids.
- Be sure to tell us if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
- You will need to remain still during the exam.
- The exam usually lasts between 20 to 40 seconds for your entire mouth and 10 seconds or less for a specific area of your mouth.
- You will be able to return to your normal activities once the exam is complete.
- After the exam, your images will be sent electronically to a board-certified Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist. The radiologist will review the information and send a report to your referring provider, typically within one to two business days.
- You should follow up with your referring provider to discuss your results.
